Jersey Boys

Share
Today's highlight will be the musical "Jersey Boys" at 2 pm.  We decided on a quiet morning, a return visit to have a look around Macy's department store.  We now have supplies of cornflakes, milk, and canned fruit in our room so can put together our own breakfast.  We chose a room with a kitchenette, which means a sink, fridge, and a microwave, so we can make tea and coffee and avoid some of the expense of going out to buy everything we eat and drink.

Macy's is indeed a huge store.  There are about 10 coffee and lunch places inside the shop.  We had a morning coffee there while we surveyed the crowds of shoppers, and connected to the internet using the free wi-fi service provided.  We went there thinking about buying some clothes, but in the end were overwhelmed by the huge range and lost interest.  After noon we set out for the theatre, going up 7th Avenue to Times Square.

Times Square is a rat-race, with thousands of people (tourists like ourselves mainly) milling about, traffic everywhere going nowhere, and all the huge advertising and information screens overhead.  A crowd was watching the FIFA Womens World Cup semifinal (USA versus France) on one screen.  It took ages to wend our way through the throng.

One screen showed the crowd below (us) so if you looked you could see yourself on up on the screen.  A huge woman (Angelina Jolie?) was pretending to pluck little people from the scene.  We are the topmost people on the left hand edge of this picture (I'm holding my camera up to take this picture):

Jersey Boys was excellent.  We had great seats, just six rows from the stage and right in the centre.  It's a dramatisation of the story of the "Four Seasons" group from the 1950's (I think), and it was really good - very professional, and the "boys" sounded just like the originals.  The theatre was packed.  We decided to see more shows while we're here.

On the way home we discovered Bryant Park (known to all fans of "Project Runway"), a pleasant grassy park surrounded by trees right in the middle of the city.  It is surrounded by towering skyscrapers.
