Travelling South

Share
We took the Skoda across Cook Strait on the ferry and set off down the east coast of the South Island.  The main target is to explore the Catlins and coast in the far south, past Dunedin, then cross west to the other coast at Doubtful Sound.

Sue checks out the big fish at Rakaia.
A Morris dancer in Timaru.
A bit of "steam punk" in Oamaru.
The famous Moeraki Boulders.  We've been before, but compulsory viewing.
Dunedin Railway station is noted for its architecture.
One of our lovely B&B stops, this one in Dunedin.
A desolate day in Surat Bay, looking for the sea lion colony.
Found one!  There were several along the beach, but most appeared fast asleep.
The entrance to the impressive Cathedral Caves in the Catlins.
A picturesque view from inside the cave mouth.
There are many beautiful beaches down this coast.  This is Waipati Beach.
Looking down across Tautuku Bay.
Sue poses by the impressive Purakaunui Falls.
Holding onto my hat in the 100 mph wind at Slope Point, most southerly bit of the South Island.
The lighthouse at Waipapa Point, another picturesque spot on the way to Invercargill.
