Bergen, Norway

Share
We travelled by sea from Flam to Bergen in a fast catamaran ferry, a trip of some five hours.  The speed made it quite uncomfortable standing outside for any length of time, so most of the trip was spent inside the cabin.  The trip down the longest (second longest?) fjord in the world was not quite as spectacular as we had hoped, probably because we have come from some even better scenery back home.  However it was still interesting, particularly as we neared Bergen, seeing the number of houses on little stoney islands barely above sea level.

Dinner on the deck beside the sea.
In Bergen we had another very nice hotel, a stone's throw from the sea in the middle of town.  The weather stayed fine and sunny, although it was cool in the wind.  We rode up the hill behind the town on a steep cable car ride above twice as long as Wellington's, for a great view over the city.

Us above Bergen, Norway.  At the top of the cable car from the city below.

A walk into the woods above Bergen.  We had a coffee at that kiosk.

Whale burger anyone?  They also had moose burgers.

Famous wonky buildings along the Bergen waterfront (Bryggen).

This elk was looking at me.
When our time was up in Bergen, we travelled by train back to Oslo.  The railway is the same one which took us part of the way to Flam, a few days ago.  It passes through the highest point on any mainline railway in Europe, where we could see snow fields just above us.  Back in Oslo we had just one day before it was time to end our Scandinavian tour, and fly on to Portugal.
