Gallipoli

Share
Wireless won't work, so text for now. At hotel second day, first very tired, still quite jet-lagged. Is hot and windy, looks like NZ a lot. Went to Gallipoli, tomorrow am going to Troy then Istanbul. Did notice tons of petrol stations! Still blocked nose but ok. Hope you two are having a good time - text you later. James.

Our first stop along our tour was to visit the Gallipoli area. The landscape was surprisingly similar to Wellington's South Coast, though the climate most certainly wasn't. We visited a few famous battle locations like Quinn's Post, and got a look at the kind of impossible terrain the ANZAC troops were expected to fight in. There is certainly a sense of camaraderie between the Turkish and NZ people, knowing that the whole Gallipoli campaign was fairly pointless and ultimately the fighting was nothing to do with either of them, rather being dragged in to it by their "allies". We visited a few monuments and laid a wreath to commemorate our troops who died there.

We also went to an archaeological site which was the alleged remains of Troy - the locals certainly thought so!
Better let this gift through the gate!
