The Gothic Quarter

Share
Our Airbnb apartment is quite nice, with lots of room and a decent shower and bed.  The lighting is a bit gloomy ("atmospheric" according to our host).  The street is narrow, and filled with four or five-storey apartments.  Here are some photos of the apartment, and some taken out of the window:

There are many small shops at street level, and plenty of activity at all hours of the day and night (especially when we are trying to sleep).  It is in the "El Raval" quarter in the old part of town, near to the main "La Rambla" touristy avenue.  Across La Rambla is the Gothic Quarter, which is where we went today.

We emerged from the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter out onto the water front near the Franca railway station (for trains from France), where there are major roads, large hotels and office buildings.  Along the waterfront is a wide promenade, and it was quite pleasant and sunny so there were lots of walkers, joggers and cyclists.  Not warm enough for swimming mind you.

We lunched on a sandwich sitting in the sun on the promenade, then turned homewards back along the waterfront.  At the seaward end of La Rambla a large statue of Christopher Columbus sits atop a column, pointing the way: (He's actually pointing the wrong way)  His finger is half a metre long, and he stands 7 metres tall, so it's a big statue.
