Gretna Green

Share
Gretna Green is a little town in Scotland, just across the border from England.  It became famous in the 1700's because Scottish law meant it was much easier to get married there than in England, so many couples secretly travelled there to wed.

Today the village blacksmith which used to conduct many such weddings is now a busy tourist stop, and hundreds of couples still go there to get married.  We stopped for a cuppa and looked through the exhibits in the visitor centre, where we were approached by "Ian" who asked if we would be witnesses for a wedding!  So we were two of the seven people present at the wedding of Paul and Andrea from Wales, and duly signed the register.

Ian told us they did 1,500 weddings last year, in this venue alone.
