Gallipoli

Share
Today was Gallipoli day, starting with an early ferry crossing over one kilometre of water from Asia to Europe.  We will stay in Europe for the last day of our tour.

Gallipoli is relatively well-known to New Zealanders, so here a just a few photos at some of the key locations.  We had a lovely morning for our visit, as you can see, but later on the (long) road back to Istanbul we went through several thunderstorms and heavy rain.

The commemorative site, just next to Anzac Cove (below).

Sue checks out Anzac Cove,  It is tiny.
I was surprised to realise how big a mistake was made on 25 April 1915 when the Anzacs landed at the wrong place.  They found themselves looking up at steep cliffs and ridges, whereas if they had landed in the correct location 2 kilometres south the land behind the beach is almost flat!  The outcome may well have been very different.

There were many groups of conservatively-dressed Turkish women visiting Gallipoli while we were there.  We do not know why, exactly.
